Access more data and gain greater efficiencies with an AMI communications network using MimoLink™ radios Improving accuracy for billing and allowing better management of power usage to prevent outages, AMI communications networks are designed to ensure utilities can obtain timely access to key network health and usage statistics. Our high-capacity Tornado radios are the ideal solution for backhauling data from AMI collectors while still leaving residual bandwidth for other utilities use cases such as SCADA or voice backhaul. Find out more about our customer, Navopache Electric Cooperative and their project to combine their AMI communications backhaul and SCADA across one high capacity Ubiik Mimomax wireless network.
Backhaul traffic from the base station is secure and encrypted, and interconnects to a Head End System (HES). The HES provides portable and scalable microservices aimed at reliable processing and packaging of up-to-date and timely information for customers to understand their meter data and make impactful business decisions. Ubiik’s HES further supports IEC 62056 (DLMS/COSEM), IEC 61968-9 and ANSI C12.21 to ensure interoperability between metering systems and MDMS.
A base station acts as an intermediate Data Concentrator Unit (DCU) to aggregate the data traffic from and to smart meters. Thanks to the high efficiency of spectrum utilization and long range of Weightless™ technology, a single base station is able to support up to 1,000 electricity meters within kilometers in radius. Base stations connect via an Ethernet or 4G backhaul to a Head End System (HES).
Obtaining massive amounts of data from meters in the field can prove a daunting task. In the case of utility-level deployment, this can mean the implementation of hundreds of thousands to millions of smart meters. Each of these field devices must reliably transmit and receive data at regular intervals (or on demand) from an upstream controller. This transmission must also occur under a wide range of varying environmental conditions. Ubiik’s solutions are not limited to just smart meters - our focus is on providing connectivity to meet the needs of a range of Internet of Things (IoT) devices in a variety of industries.
Ubiik works with a wide range of smart meter vendors to integrate wireless communication technologies. For instance, Ubiik’s work for the Taipower AMI project involves integrating Weightless™ RF communication into Taipower electricity meters from various vendors across Taiwan. Ubiik also has experience integrating wireless communication to meters following IEC (Europe), ANSI (America) and JIS (Japan) standards.
Since winning the first tender in 2018, Ubiik has secured five consecutive AMI contracts with Taipower, scaling Taiwan’s smart grid from an initial 70,200 meters to a massive deployment of over 1.1 million endpoints...
To support an ambitious AMI upgrade alongside mission-critical SCADA control, Navopache Electric Cooperative required a solution that could guarantee high availability in areas without a traditional microwave backbone...
